Our problems are not what they seem.
For every crisis, we seem to think that we need more innovation, technology, and new thinking. But what if our problems stem not from scarcity, but from abundance? What if the solutions lie in less, not more?
There are millions who starve not due to a lack of agricultural techniques or sufficient land, but because of widespread corruption, power politics, and unfair distribution of wealth. Our cities are choking on pollution and traffic not due to lack of space, clean energy, or transportation technologies, but because of too much cheap fuel and land. And modern diseases stem not from a lack of food, water, or healthy living conditions, but because of abundant food, physical comfort, and pharmaceuticals.
No, we do not believe in some mythical utopian past. We like things like Penicillin and the Internet.
But we do believe that, for the most part, we have enough. We have enough food, enough space, enough technology, enough energy.
The only thing we lack is the wisdom to stop.
